Responsible AI, digital government, and data-driven sustainability innovation — rigorous methods, real-world impact.
How organisations, especially public sector organizations, can adopt generative AI responsibly. In collaboration with Sundsvall Municipality, I used Action Design Research to develop design principles for openness and transparency, leading to an open, model-independent AI platform that avoids vendor lock-in and protects data sovereignty. The platform is now in active use across departments, with a growing open-source ecosystem (HICSS 2025).
Renewing legacy systems and delivering citizen-centred public services. Working with a Swedish municipality that leads in public-sector digital transformation, my research develops design principles that guide legacy-system renewal and address socio-technical debt (HICSS 2024; SCIS 2023).
How posts on social media platforms influence user engagement. How interface design shapes user behavior. From big-data, theory-building studies of engagement cultivation (analysing 55,358 posts and 7.8M interactions with LDA topic modelling; IJIM 2022) to the effects of interface design on user contributions in social commerce (ISJ 2020) and influencer marketing on social platforms (PACIS 2022).
Interface design, attention allocation, perceived anonymity, and user contributions in social commerce and online communities (ICIS 2013; PACIS 2024).
The role of data and analytics in tackling societal challenges, such as green finance (HICSS 2023), green consumption(ECIS 2012), sustainable food networks, ocean sustainability(Ocean Data Factory), and climate resilience (BALTFLOODS).

BALTFLOODS (Baltic Flood Resilience and Digital Solutions) is an EU-funded cooperation initiative under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme. It improves flood preparedness and reduces stormwater pollution in Baltic cities through digital technologies and citizen participation, developing advanced monitoring systems that give municipalities real-time environmental data, and engaging citizens, schools, and local stakeholders in disaster preparedness. Led by the City of Lappeenranta with partners from Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Germany. I lead the University of Gothenburg team, focusing on app development and citizen engagement.

ODF is Sweden's national marine data lab and innovation platform for the "blue economy," bringing together universities, companies, and public agencies to accelerate the use of ocean data, AI, machine learning, and digital technologies for sustainable marine development. I led Work Package II across both phases. I founded and ran a 21-part webinar series connecting researchers, industry, and government. The webinars are on the Ocean Data Factory Sweden YouTube Channel.
